Winter 2013 Japanese-Style Fence Project

Historic Ithaca received a Sustainable Tompkins Neighborhood Mini-Grant to fund the construction of a fence and bike rack at Significant Elements. In January 2013, carpenter Peter Wiedmann led Work Preserve Job Training Program participants in the construction of the fence using Japanese hand tools and joinery techniques.

The Japanese-style screen fence is made of local untreated black locust with mortise and tenon construction. Pete taught Austin, Davonne, and Doug how to use traditional hand tools to create the mortises, tenons, wedges, and pegs needed to build the fence without any metal fasteners. The Work Preserve team dug the post holes, then assembled and installed the fence on a snowy late January day. Stop by to see their work!
